“Every film should have its own world... that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing.”
— Christopher Nolan
Every Friday, as the light goes down over Lake Victoria, a screen goes up at Kampala Film School.
Cinema Tangaza is where we watch films together — student work, cinema classics, and new voices from across the region. Not in a lecture hall. Out in the open, with the lake behind you and the film in front of you.
Cinema Tangaza is where films are shown before the world sees them — and after the world has already fallen in love with them. Student films get their first real audience here. Classic films get re-examined by new eyes. Regional work gets a room that takes it seriously.
Every screening is followed by conversation. Not a Q&A — a discussion. Open, honest, and focused on what the film is doing and how.
Open to all. Free to attend. KFS students, staff, the university community, and the public are all welcome. Come as you are. Bring a friend. Stay for the conversation.
When a student screens their film here, they don’t just watch it with an audience. They hear it.
The room stays. The conversation starts. Notes come from faculty, from fellow students, from people who walked in off the street because they saw the screen from the road.
Story. Image. Sound. Ethics. What landed. What didn’t. What could be sharper.
That’s the feedback. In the open. In real time. With the people who will actually watch your film one day.
Last Friday of every month.
A film from East Africa. And when we can, the person who made it — in the room, on the shore, answering questions from the audience that just watched their work.
This is where the industry becomes real. Not a guest lecture. Not a masterclass. A filmmaker, their film, and a room full of people who want to understand how it was made.
This is how networks begin. Not with a business card. With a conversation after the credits.
